Can I ask for another interview within a year

I interviewed with McKinsey in august and did not receive the offer after 2nd round. I was told that I could apply again in a year “if nothing special happened”. Since then, I have had internships at both Bain & Company (in September-November), and BCG (November-January). I have received full-time offers from both, and BCG told me that if I make my decision within 5 weeks, I will receive a solid bonus. Would it be okay to ask McKinsey for a new interview even though it has not been a year?

Hi Knut,

Congrats on your BCG offer.

The oner year cooling period is pretty standard and usually the candiadtes will not be interviewed again during this period.

However, if you the contact of the recruiter for McKinsey, would suggest to reach out and tell them that McKinsey is your first choice and you have an offer from BCG and would love the opportunity to interview with McKinsey again before accepting the BCG offer. Also tell them about the internships you have done. They might be willing to make an exception for you.

Otherwise, if you just submit another online application it will be automatically rejected.

Good luck,

Lilit

Hi Lilit, Thank you for this reply to the author of the post. I think this informaion is really helpful to know for everyone! I also have a question. If I apply to interview with McKinsey again during the 12 months period and get automatically rejected. Would the 12 months period restart again or would it still only count from the innitial rejection I got? I hope you have a wonderful day! Hao Nguyen

Hi there,

Yes, do it.

Sounds like you actually accumulated quite a bit of experience in the meantime. Reach out to the recruiter to ask for another shot and see what they say.

Best,

Cristian

Hi Knut,

First of all, congratulations on the full-time offers from both Bain and BCG!

I think this is an interesting question that may be relevant for many people. I would be happy to share my thoughts on it:

  • The timing of when you can reapply to McKinsey after not receiving an offer can vary depending on the specific circumstances and the firm's policies. The statement that you were told to apply again in a year "if nothing special happened" is a bit ambiguous, and it's best to reach out to McKinsey's recruiting team to clarify their reapplication policy.
  • It's worth reaching out to McKinsey and inquire about the possibility of scheduling a new interview, highlighting both your recent experiences at and offers from Bain and BCG, and the progress you have made in your development since the last interview.
  • Keep in mind that even if McKinsey is willing to schedule a new interview, there is no guarantee that you will receive an offer. The firm will consider your qualifications, experience, and fit for the role, as well as the current needs and priorities of the firm.
  • Lastly, while it may be worth reaching out to McKinsey and inquiring about the possibility of scheduling a new interview, it's also important to consider whether your focus on McKinsey is still the best fit for you. You have received full-time offers from two other top consulting firms, Bain and BCG, and each firm has its own unique culture, approach, and areas of focus.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to address your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hi Knut,

Congratulations on the offers! In terms of your question:

Q: I have received full-time offers from both, and BCG told me that if I make my decision within 5 weeks, I will receive a solid bonus. Would it be okay to ask McKinsey for a new interview even though it has not been a year?

I would call HR and explain the situation. You can ask over the phone if there could be an option to apply a few months earlier as McKinsey would be your favourite company. They could say that’s not possible but you have nothing to lose by trying in this way.

Best,

Francesco

Hi Knut,

If anyone can it's you…

What a fantastic situation to be in.

Call up the recruiter, tell them about both internships and offers and then say you're happy, but McKinsey is your #1 choice. As if they can do an accelerated interview as you need to tell BCG in 5 weeks.

Also, this is really important: if you don't get McKinsey please don't be upset…many would give an arm and a leg to get an offer from even one of these three, let alone both! BCG and Bain offers are not a failure by any stretch of the imagination.

Hi there,

Very impressive. Imagine having all MBB on your resume - that would be quite something!

Are you trying to get a McKinsey offer before the BCG/Bain deadline expires? That's going to be tough but what have you got to loose? Reach out now, tell them your situation, and go for it!

Best,
Moritz

Hi Knut,

Congrats! Great choices :-)

In your case, it definitely makes sense and is even very likely to get re-invited early. I would reach out to someone in McKinsey that you know, who can push your application and create a sense of urgency from the inside/give a referral, then re-apply.

Cheers,

Florian

Consider you will have alot more information on BCG and Bain than you will have about McKinsey given your internships there. If there was one that stood out, take th eoffer.I would only be applying to McKinsey if you are planning on not taking up BCG or Bain. But that raises red flags as consulting may not be right for you as the work you do at BCG/Bain will be very similar to McKinsey. It will take much more than 5 weeks to apply to McKinsey and it is not necessarily guaranteed that they will interview you again. And you may find that you don't enjoy the McKinsey culture if you join.

Hello!

Congrats, you really made the most of your time in those last months!

100%, you need to urgently reach out to the recruiter that handled your case in McK and tell them about the BCG deadline (treat it as deadline, and not as a "it would nice if you signed by…).

Hope it helps!

Cheers,

Clara

I don't see why not. There's no downside to trying. And definitely there's a strong reason for them to accept your request.
