------------------ ABOUT ME ------------------

I am an experienced strategy consultant groomed at McKinsey and formerly BCG. I have led large consulting teams and worked for top level clients in Germany/Europe as well as numerous countries across Africa and the Middle East for 7 years. 

I served as a member of the core recruiting teams in BOTH McKinsey and BCG. In this function, I have formally interviewed several hundreds of applicants. Hence, I am using the REAL evaluation criteria and scoring methods that McKinsey and BCG base their decisions on and that you will be evaluated against when interviewing with these firms! Knowing both firms deeply from the inside, I can give you unique insights into the nuances that will make a difference for McKinsey or BCG respectively!

 

-------- I DON'T TEACH FRAMEWORKS, I TEACH THE RIGHT WAY OF THINKING --------

When building your case solving muscle, it is much more important to focus on quality, rather than quantity! If you fail to develop the right thinking frame, routines, and habits, the effect of doing more practice cases will be actually detrimental! So scrutinizing the right elements in terms of how to approach business problems by means of a rigorous and bullet-proof thinking frame has to come very early in your process!

For example, probably the BIGGEST misconception that I unfortunately see with many many candidates who want to build up their case solving muscle is the failure to acknowledge and internalize the following:

Structure DOES NOT equal frameworks!

The multiple frameworks that you can find in pertinent case literature for different types of business questions are nothing more than a good basic toolbox in terms of which areas to look into for certain types of problems. However, they are very poor regarding HOW TO APPROACH a case and HOW TO DRAFT A ROADMAP for solving the case. This approach and roadmap needs to be rooted in rigorous and specific logic. Unfortunately the "framework learning philosophy" brought forward by, e.g., Case in Point, is the very reason why an overwhelming majority of candidates will not get an offer. Hence, teaching my mentees how to approach ANY type of business situation by means of first principles rather than "frameworks" is one of the fundamental elements established early on in my coaching sessions.

 

------------------ TRACK RECORD AND OFFERING ------------------

As a private interview coach, I have helped more than 150 candidates to break into consulting in the last 24 months alone - with almost 90% success rate (only 19 candidates did not receive an offer)! Roughly 75% of these successful candidates secured offers from either McKinsey or BCG! The remaining offers distribute across Bain, Booz/S&, Roland Berger, and Oliver Wyman. I am NOT focusing on smaller firms!

On Preplounge, about 80% of people who book an initial session with me are booking additional follow-up sessions, which gives a good illustration of the helpfulness of the coaching. Large part of my mentees decide to do a multi-week preparation programme. Almost all preparation courses & material out there teach you to try and fit a case to a pre-defined framework. These frameworks consist of “areas” or “buckets” which the candidate is told to lay out to the interviewer as the topics he wants to look into.

Unfortunately, this has nothing to do with how a top strategy consultant addresses complex problems. It is reflecting a very naïve and junior way of thinking, mostly stemming from the fact that this preparation material has been devised by persons who have only spent between 1 and 3 years at an MBB firm. This means that they had not yet learned the principles of how to apply rigorous and bullet-proof top down thinking to essentially ANY problem – which is only learned and regularly applied once a consultant has become an experience Project Leader / Engagement Manager.

Applying this way of thinking is by far the most powerful weapon you could ever use when tackling case questions. Understanding how to structure based on first principles and crystal clear logic, rather than immature bucket lists & “frameworks” (which are always wrong by the way; unlike rigorous top-down logic, which by its very nature is always true, irrespective of what concrete information you will later get from the interviewer!).

We start by teaching you how to think like a seasoned consultant, how to make your thinking and communication stand out miles above essentially all other candidates that MBB interviewers (have to) deal with. Based on a meticulous assessment of your intrinsic strengths and weaknesses, we forge a customized plan to get you to a level where you can enter every single interview at any MBB with 100% confidence and certainty that you WILL impress the interviewer across all important dimensions!

The programme comprises 8 sessions:

  • A detailed diagnostic session (foundation for the customized preparation plan)
  • 1-2 focus sessions on the principles of logic-base top down thinking & structuring (setting up logic structures for any problem (based on the principles of value creation, the “holy grail” of the top strategy consultant!), defining criteria to address the core question, enriching your logic with contextualized detail, etc.)
  • 2-4 focus session on various elements of the case navigation process (comprising elements of prioritization, crystal clear communication, definition and setup of the RIGHT analyses, conducting analyses in a bullet-proof way,  etc.)
  • 1-2 focus sessions on the fit / personal experience interview (explanation of what exactly firms are trying to find out and WHY they ask which questions, jointly working out stand out stories that highlight exactly the areas that the firms are looking for, customizing each interview answer to either McKinsey, BCG and Bain to focus exactly on what is important to the specific firm(s) you are interviewing with)
  • 0-3 customized focus sessions to address any intrinsic issues you might have and that might need extra scrutiny in order to get to “offer-ready”-level
  • Homework along the preparation journey
  • If needed: 1 focus session on written case in BCG or Bain style (not used in all offices/regions)
  • If needed: 15 practice PST cases in the McKinsey style
