Hello all,

I interviewed with McKinsey a few months ago but was unsuccessful. I want to know if it is at all possible to re-apply in a new country without completing the 18-month wait. The difference is that last time I did not have any formal work ex whereas now I do. Please share your advice.

Hello,

I'm glad to hear that you haven't given up and worked to strengthen your credentials in the meantime!

As to the 18-month rule. I can see some flexibility in there depending on the office. That's why I would try to contact the recruitment representative or other person from your desired office to inquire about your specific situation before reapplying.

I'm not sure if I'm reading your message correctly but it seems like despite the lack of formal job experience you passed the screening and had an in-person (or virtual) interview. This makes me think that it could've been your performance during the interview rather than your experience that was found insufficient.

In such a case, I'd recommend focusing on practicing interviews before the next attempt (unless you have a reason to believe that the experience you recently gathered addresses all the deficiencies). Feel free to contact me in case you'd like to discuss this in more detail.

Best,

Slawomir

Hello,

My understanding is that the wait period is pretty standard, but it might be worth reaching out to HR to explain your situation and/or networking to get a referral, as fellow experts have suggested.

Hi there,

You have two options here:

  1. Wait until the end of the 18 months
  2. Find someone that can refer you to a different country, mention explicitly the ban, and see if they can help, ideally having them interacting first with HR. There are no guarantees this will work though. In this second option you will have to:
    • Show relevant improvements in your CV that justify the early application
    • Wait a minimum amount of time anyway (I would recommend 12 months)

Hope this helps,

Francesco

Hi, I would try to do it through a referral, explicitly explaining the situation. In some geography, acting like that 6-12 months can be enough

Best,

Hi there,

It's highly likely you will not be able to get around this ban.

That said, if you're determined, there's no harm in reaching out to the new country/office HR/Recruiting team (especially if you have a referral)…try and then get a firm answer!

Ex-McKinsey / 100% offer rate / LBS / Principle driven / Real case/ If you get the interview, you should get the offer!

Hi there. It is definitely possible but you will need a referral who can forward your resume to the recruiter and explain your situation (i.e. the improvement on your working experience), instead of applying online, which will automatically reject you due to the freezing period.

So the key is to network and secure good referral :)

All the best!

Hey there,

Whenever you (re)-apply after a failed application (screening, aptitude test, or interviews) you need to make sure to show significant development in your resume since your rejection. Assuming you want to be hired straight out of university this means

  • New academic achievements (e.g., new degree, top of class achievements,...)
  • Experience abroad (career or university)
  • New job experience (internships, working student, project assistant,...)
  • New extracurriculars (leadership experience, NGOs, student clubs,....)

Usually, you are banned between 12 and 24 months from re-applying. Referrals can help both

  • shorten that time
  • increase your chances for a new invitation to the interviews

Cheers,

Florian

The idea of the 18 month break is so that you have sufficient time to add relevant experiences to your resume which can then be viewed with fresh eyes. While it is possible that you can add relevant experiences in less than 18 months it typically does not stand out as such. Most people will need those 18 months to come across as a new candidate and add relevant achievements to their profile. The one exception to this rule that I have seen is if you have started an MBA program at a target school in under 18 months since you were rejected.

In short - I would recommend completing the wait, then reaching out to HR to clarify you can re-apply and to Partners at McKinsey to network and only then re-apply as opposed to applying directly online.

Best,

Udayan
