Hey everyone. My Sterling background check report came in 2 weeks ago. Had some things labeled as “consider” but no big issues from what I would say. In onboarding emails it said that McKinsey would let me know when all the background checks (including social media check) cleared and I have yet to receive any communication about my background checks in a month since I started the process and am starting to worry. Is anyone on the same boat or what has your background check experience been like this recruiting season? Current undergrad here. Thanks.

Hi there,

Did you tell the truth on your resume and have you not committed any major crimes? If so, then you're fine!

Nothing you can do at this point but wait. That said, “consider” generally isn't a problem.

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on the upcoming start with McKinsey!

This is indeed an interesting question which is probably relevant for quite a lot of users, so I am happy to provide my perspective on it:

  • Generally speaking, you obviously took the saying that your application files are equally advertising files quite literally. Still, I would advise you not to worry about the process taking longer than anticipated. During the past 9-12 months, most companies have experienced some deceleration across their business processes - even if I cannot tell why this is the case.
  • As long as you did not explicitely lie in your application files or committed a major crime, you should pass the background check.

In case you want a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare your upcoming career entry, please feel free to contact me directly.

I hope this helps,

Hagen

Hello!

Unless you have told a big lie (e.g., I graduated from this Uni, and then it´s not true) you are totally fine, trust me!

If there is anything, they will follow up, and 99.99% of the cases are minor details easy to fix.

Hope it helps!

Cheers,

Clara

If there isn't anything crazy or blatant lies out there with your name against it, you should be fine. Just relax and let the process work itself.

All the best.

If you didn't do anything that is obviously wrong you won't have any problems. You should be fine. And yes, sometimes it takes a bit longer than it should.
