Hi everyone,

I got my cv referred to an MBB. The recruiter has reached out for a call. I wanted to know what will be this call about? What kind of questions should I be asking him and finally how to make sure the application goes in the positive direction.

PS: I am applying as an experienced candidate.

Hello,

This will depend a lot on your specific situation - it could be an informational coffee-chat type of call, it could be a call to clarify something on your resume, it could be a call to verify your fit for the office/practice you are applying for (since you mention you are applying as an experienced candidate), to go through any potential Visa issues if you are international, or even to set up an interview. It shouldn't be evaluative if you already have a referral and it is not a formal interview. My advice would be to prepare to talk about anything on your resume and feel free to ask any questions you have about the recruiting process and the office/practice you are applying for.

Hi there,

It depends on the firm but most likely will be:

  1. Screening call to understand your motivation with fit questions plus provide information on the process/position to be sure you are aligned. Fit questions are usually the traditional non-stories ones:
    1. Tell me about yourself
    2. Why consulting
    3. Why us
    4. Why hire you
  2. Short case (restricted to a few offices such as McKinsey in Asia where sometimes this is conducted by recruiters without PEI)

If you did not receive additional information, I would imagine is the first option, but if you have doubts you can reach out to HR to clarify.

Best,

Francesco

Hey there,

This is 95% just a nice get-to-know you with simple resume questions.

Usually it follows the following format:

1. Context

The recruiter provides information and context about the role

2. Questions to you

These questions are usually simple in nature

  • Guide me through your resume?
  • Why consulting?
  • Why our firm?
  • What experiences did you gather that can benefit you in your role with us?

3. Questions from you

Ask about things you are genuinely interested

  • Recruiting process
  • Interview tips
  • Development of the office
  • Changes pre to post-Covid
  • etc

Cheers,

Florian

Hi there,

This is great! You're basically at the HR Screening stage. If this call goes well, you'll be invited to interview.

Prepare like a regular interview. It won't be as intense, but you should be ready with 1) Resume walkthrough 2) Why Consulting 3) Why the company. Some help here in how to craft those answers:

https://www.preplounge.com/en/tell-me-about-yourself-interview-question

You should also be very clear about why you're interested in the office, and have a good idea of what possible roles might fit you. They will let you know which roles they think you fit in (and, ideally, this matches what you expect).

Be prepared with good questions as well.

Top rated Case & PEI coach/Multiple real offers/McKinsey EM in New York /6 years McKinsey recruiting experience

Typically, for experienced hires, the first recruiter call is for them to understand your background and for them to walk you through the interview process. For example, at McKinsey this process looks different than the process for new graduates because there is an additional phone screen. They will also tell you about the resources available to you to help you prepare and any other relevant information you need.

All the best,

Udayan
