Hi,

At 45yrs, I've had a long career in product development and R&D. I, currently, am based in Germany and have intermediate German proficiency. I intend to move into operations or strategy consulting. I had a chat with an acquaintance - a BCG partner (who's in finance) - and he gave me the contact of a HR stating I could mention him as a referee. I also had a chat with an ex-McKinsey who too directed me to a HR he knew. I just sent my resume to both the HRs in Germany. The two contacts are not close to me but have a good impression of my resume.

Questions:

1. Is my career transition ambition realistic ?

2. Does contacting HR directly mentioning a name amount to a referral?

3. What are my chances of getting an interview in these two cases?

Thank you.

Best Regards

Ron

Let me answer backwards.

If the partners looked at your CV and are telling you to use their name, then there's a good chance of getting an interview. I would count this as a referral - I believe HR would confirm later on the referal.

In general, with the information you provided, I would say this transition is not realistic but… the partners that looked into your resume clearly had a different opinion, and they obviously have the details, know their needs… overall they know best. So it looks like you have a chance.

Usually partners will send an email to HR in order to start the formal referral process so this is a bit strange. Did you hear back from HR?

In terms of a move to MBB, your background seems quite strong, especially for a specialist type role - however do keep in mind this is an extremely demanding career shift to make at 45.

Yes, it struck me only later that this is not the usual referral process. However, he did mention that I could refer to his name when contacting the HR. I applied yesterday. Have not had a reply yet. Thank you for cautioning on the workload. Best Regards Ron

All the best! I think you should hear back in a couple of weeks. If you have their email address you should cc them if you need to follow up.

Hi there,

Honestly I am surprised by the sequence of events but if these Partners are backing you (which it seems they are) you stand a good chance of getting an interview at one of these places!

At the end of the day, you do stand long odds, but Partner referrals go a long way so I think you absolutely stand a realistic chance here. Have an open conversation with HR and the Partners to see if they think you'll do well with the transition etc. (it's very hard, so you do have to be very determined)
