Every single time there has been a game based assessment such as Pwc Arctic Shore, Pymetrics or Mckinsey's Imbellus game I have always been rejected and not passed this stage.

On the other hand, when given a numerical/verbal test I generally don't have any problem passing to the next stage. The problem is that for full time recruiting most of companies with a large presence in my targeted city are all using game based assessment.

What can I do to increase my chances of passing these game based assessments?

Hey there,

If game-based assessments are something you are struggling with, I would recommend you to get exposure to such games over time (if it makes sense and you know that you will face such assessments in the future again, otherwise it might be a waste of time if you don't enjoy it) to build baseline skills and stamina.

The thing is that McKinsey argues that they introduced the Imbellus to get rid of any bias related to prior knowledge of applicants, which was the case with their older PST.

My experience of interviewing more than 250 people who have taken the Imbellus shows that candidates who have gamed a lot in the past (all different kinds of games on Playstation, phone, or PC) have a much easier time to find their orientation and move through the tasks than people, who have little or no gaming experience.

So in my opinion they just introduced a new bias. Anyway…

For Imbellus play

  • Tower Duel (that Is the name of the game)
  • Plague Inc

For Pymetrics play

  • Brain training apps on IOS or Android

Cheers,

Florian

The skillset required for standard PSTs v/s the new-age PSGs are indeed somewhat different.

PSTs require only core skills - such as math. They test your ability to solve a particular question as it stands. You might have done similar question in your undergrad or so. Hence you chew through them quite easily.

PSGs on the other hand have a little less intensive math. But the style of decision making is very different. You need to take 80/20 calls. You need to consider the decisions you have taken previously, and a premonition of what decisions you might make next. You need to have a more anticipatory attitude.

That said - the only way to practice well for PSGs is to practice games. For tower defense you can pick games like Kingdom Rush. For Ecosystem games you can look at a Steam game called Equilinox.
