what, if any, are the differences in grading criteria for the BA vs Associate roles? Are the scales/rubrics different?

Hi,

that´s a very good question - for sure there are differences as Associate is a more senior role than BA. Hence you as an applicant are expected to have a more “mature” profile for a Associate role.

However, you should neither conclude that it is decided based on the interviews if you get a BA or Asc offer nor that you should apply for BA to have an easier interview.

The difference between hiring an BA vs. ASC is mainly based on the background and experience of the applicant. Please also take into account that in some countries there is not a BA role existing within MBB.

Hope that helps,

Simon

#1 BCG coach | MBB | Tier 2 | Digital, Tech, Platinion | 100% personal success rate (8/8) | 95% candidate success rate

Hi there,

The things on which you are measured (communication, structuring, etc.) are most certainly the same. However, the bar is, of course, higher for the Associate roles.

In terms of how this answer applies to you and changes your preparation…it shouldn't….you know what you need to get good at and improve on, don't worry about the relative measurements across roles…just maximize your case + interview skills!

Yes the rubrics/scales will be different since the overall expectations from you are different for both the roles. The more senior the role - the higher the bar. That said - your “eligibility” for a role is generally decided based on your experience. If you are eligible for Associate - you might not be considered for the BA role and hence will be expected to have skills expected from someone at Associate level.

It's the same. In my experience as a final round interviewer, the average BA candidate was stronger with the case than an average ASC candidate. For PEI, it was the opposite, as you would expect but you still get summer BA intern candidates with very impressive stories.

Hi, yes, even if the interview process will be exactly the same, for an associate role more emphasis will be given to communication, problem structuring, and fit part.

Best,
Antonello
