I am about to have FIT interview coaching. What is the best way to run this session? I think just to do mock and get feedback from the coach. What else should I consider? Considering this coach is an ex-interviewer. Thank you

Hi there,

Honestly, the coach should be leading you on this!

First, ask the coach if they have anything they'd like you to prepare (For example, I always send through fit preparation material beforehand and ask them to prepare their stories/answers accordingly).

Second, let the coach know what you're looking for and see if they have suggestions.

Finally, let the coach guide you during the session…they should know best!

There are a few options in terms of how to actually run the session optimally, and these change depending on candidate preferences (send me a DM and I can share with you the 3-4 approaches to a fit interview coaching session…I can't share that here for obvious reasons!).

Prepare well before the session
Practice out loud, prepare a well structured genuine story (not a generic answer), try to highlight your strengths in the story

Typical questions include:

- why consulting?
- why this consulting firm specifically?
- why this office / region?
- situational questions - to be answered using the STAR approach (e.g. tell me about a a challenging situation and how you dealt with it, when you were faced with conflict and how did you address the situation, something you are proud of and why, etc.)
- strengths / weaknesses / etc.

Lastly, ask for honest feedback and show willingness to improve and further work on your answers - fit is also about being coachable, humble and nice :))

Good luck!

Hello,

There is no one best way. I thought Agrim's suggestions were pretty helpful depending where in the stage you were at. In general, if you have done some work on your fit answers and haven't worked with this coach before, I think doing a mock fit and getting some feedback could be quite good. If you are at an earlier stage, you could ask to shorten the mock interview part, and spend the extra time workshopping your storyline or talking through how best to approach interview questions. If there are particular questions you struggle with, you could talk through that too.

Depends on where you are in your preparation and what you want to achieve:

  • If you do not have many FIT answers prepared - then the coaching can be focused on brainstorming and back & forth to unearth some new and additional stories that can help you fill the checklist
  • If this is the first time you are running your stories with a coach then you can focus on getting storyline-level feedback
  • If you have practiced your stories a bit - then you might want to focus feedback on your delivery, expressions, etc.
  • If you are nearly there and want to reach perfection then have the coach try to poke with all sorts of fit questions and digressions for a stress test.
  • And so on…

Feel free to message me with details on where you are at in the prep. Happy to discuss your path forward.

Hi!

I think there is no best way to run the session!

I would first define your objective - which for example might be: I want to clarify all the doubts I have regarding the FIT interview - and then do the session consequently.

I would still let him guide you across the main questions, main evaluation criteria, and his/her personal recommendations and then ask for feedback on your performance.

Hope this helps.

Best,

Anto

Hi there,

I would recommend the following:

  1. Ask the coach if he/she has a list of questions, ideally for your target company/office. I have a db with real questions asked in the past and send the relevant ones to my mentees before the session
  2. Prepare your answers upfront
  3. Tell the coach which are the most challenging ones and focus on them during the class

Best,

Francesco

I would really tailor it to your level of preparation and comfort. I’ve done sessions where we would start from a candidates CV to dig up relevant stories, discussing the outline of prepared stories to a full mock session to also cover delivery of the story. I would recommend making sure you have the right stories vetted by a former interviewer before you spend too much time on the details. In such case you could cover say 5 different stories in a 60 min session.

good luck!

Hey there,

If the coach is experienced, they will run the session so that you get the most benefit out of it + answer all your questions before the session and after.

Best reach out to the coach directly to clarify how they want to run the session!

Cheers,

Florian

Practice as many as you can in the session and get feedback on the following:

1. How impactful the example/story is

2. How long (in mins) are you talking for

3. How do you sound- tone of voice, passionate, emotive etc?!

4. How well you structure the example: start (Clear context and scene setting) , middle ( details of what you did and what was the outcome) , end ( whats the insight/what did you learn)
