Hi all, I'm reaching out on LinkedIn to university alumni to try to set up informal chats and network towards a referral for an interview.

One thing I'm wondering is: what time to propose to chat? Which day, and what time of day, would consultants be most willing to spend 15 minutes chatting with an applicant? Is it a better idea to not propose a time at all and wait for them to suggest one?

Thanks!

Similar to what other coaches said: I wouldn't propose any time slots straight away (might come across as too pushy). Would be better to let the other person suggest the appropriate time slots for them.

Best of luck!

Hi there,

I would not propose a very specific day and time. However you can suggest a period like “If suitable, I would be happy if we could keep in touch next week, whenever more convenient for you”.

As a side note, I would not recommend to use LinkedIn to reach out, emails work a lot better.

Hi!

I would be proactive and recommend two / three slots (mainly late afternoon / evening( across a couple of different days and see what they reply.

If they are not available in those slots, they will likely propose alternative ones.

Hope this helps.

Best,

Anto

Hello,

I agree with the other experts' advice here. Reach out, show your interest, and say that you have some questions, but let them suggest the time slots that work for a call.

Personal opinion as a consultant: 15-min chats are most convenient on the weekends or weekday evenings. Its generally inconvenient to have such side-calls during the work day since it is distracting.

However, no need to suggest the time slot to the person - provide them a wide range - such as “next few days” and let them come up with a time slot.

Also - if there is no calendar invite - then it is your responsibility to send reminders.

Hi there,

Please don't suggest a day/time or explicity ask for a call. It's overly forward/assuming and gets you off on the wrong foot!

Just tell them you have a number of questions and would like to learn about their journey (tailor it).

Let them propose the call!
