McKinsey application process

Hi everyone,

Recently I have been interviewed at McKinsey US for the associate position APD. Unfortunately, I could not make it. In the interview feedback, they mentioned that I can apply for the same position after a year but also, I can apply for any other role immediately if I want. Therefore and Since I am not an MBA graduate, I applied to business analyst in The Middle East.

my question is, was it right what I did ? And what is the probability of getting the interview in the new office for the new position?

Hi there,

1) My question is, was it right what I did?

If you applied before for an Associate position, either the application for Associate was incorrect or the current one is incorrect, depending on your seniority. It is difficult to judge which one is the case without further information.

2) And what is the probability of getting an interview in the new office for the new position?

Very difficult to comment without additional data. Regardless, this is not under your control now. For other applications, I would recommend finding a referral, as the person referring you can also comment on the correct level you should apply.

I qualify to the associate position as I did interviews for this position in one of the most competitive offices in the world in US. However, I could not move forward because I was not structured in some aspects of the case based on their feedback. Since my goal is to get in McKinsey regardless the position, I thought that I apply to more junior position not to wait for the year and to crack the case interview.

Hi there, if they didn’t recommend applying for a more junior role and you satisfy the requirements for the Associate position, I would recommend sticking to that position for other companies. In terms of the McKinsey application, given you have already submitted it doesn’t matter much at this stage unless you are considering withdrawing it, worst case if they reject you, from what you shared you can apply again in one year for the Associate role. Good luck!

Hi there,

If they said you could apply to anohter role, then that's perfectly fine!

I honestly think your odds are low, but, regardless, you should prepare as if you have the interview.

Why?

Because clearly you need more work/practice/prep and, at the very least, you want to be ready for your interviews at the other consultancies!

Make sure to take their feedback, self reflect, get coaching, and fix your weaknesses.

I am just wondering if they evaluate the application from the scratch or just take a look on previous attempts. I got interview in one of the most competitive offices in the world for the associate position/having work experience, target school,…… . If they to evaluate from the scratch, why is the odds low?

Hello,

If they told you that you could apply, then there’s nothing wrong with going ahead and doing just that! Regarding which is the better fitting position for you, we’d need much more information about your candidacy to determine that.

Regarding probability of getting the interview, I don’t think you’ve given us enough information to assess this. If you already made it to the interview stage for the Associate position though, that’s a good sign.

Hi there,

thanks for your question - it's a bit hard to gauge what they meant by “other role” without further information.

Overall, if they told you it's fine to apply for other roles, then what you did should be fine. Hope, however, you did so with a referral backing up your candidacy.

Feel free to reach out via DM to share more about your profile for more specific advice. It will depend on your actual experience to see which role calibration (BA, Associate etc) is most adequate in your case.

Regards, Andi

Hi,
In the feedback call, I asked the HR “how soon can I reapply?” and they told that for the associate role, you need to wait a year. However, for any other rule, you can apply by the way. I applied to the junior associate position and the system accepted my application.
When I tried to apply as an associate, the system said that you already applied. But for the junior associate, it has been submitted.
My old application status on the system is “in progress”. Will my new application be reviewed while the first application status is “in progress”? / it is closed in reality

Hi there!

The ‘was it right’ part of the question only you can answer.

i.e., is it aligned with your goals? would you be happy doing this role?

From an outside perspective, considering the market is not great at the moment, and having the long-term goal in mind, a BA role is great. The most important thing is to get going and then things will move quite fast in terms of promotions and gaining seniority.

Best,
Cristian
